WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?
You get to rent or buy outdoor gear from other outdoor loving people whenever you want. Those other outdoor loving people get paid for their sale or rental. This is an outdoor gear sharing platform for all to benefit from – renters and buyers get cheaper rates and can access gear they might not have found otherwise, and owners make extra pocket money. We think it’s a win-win and helps promote reuse, which helps reduce our eco-footprint. Want to get paid to rent out or sell your second-hand outdoor gear? Just click the “Submit Listing” button on the homepage header bar. For more details, please see our featured article “How This Works“.
WHO CAN JOIN AND LIST?
Who Can Join?
Anyone around the globe can join to gain access to gear that is for rent or for sale.
Who Can List?
For now, we are accepting gear listings from owners that live in Canada and the U.S.
WHAT CAN I LIST?
SALE Listings: Generally, your items will fall into the following categories: camping, biking, skiing, snowboarding, travel, hiking, paddling (etc.). You can list non-motorized, outdoor adventure items in safe working condition.
RENTAL Listings: Rental listings are restricted to camping, backpacking, and hiking related items.
To protect you as an owner, we don’t allow any sales or rentals of second-hand safety-related equipment or equipment for children.
HOW DO I LIST MY GEAR?
All you need to do is create your user account by clicking on ‘Submit Gear Listing‘ or ‘Sign Up’ and add a new listing with pictures, a description, pricing, and availability information. Once your gear is on our website, others will be able to browse and pick your gear for their next adventure.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I CHARGE TO RENT OUT MY GEAR?
Whatever makes it worthwhile for you and is still a good deal for renters (compared to rental businesses / resorts). Maybe you don’t want to list that brand new untouched gear that you just bought, but I bet you have some extra gear kicking around that would love to go to work for you. In the end, your price should simply be whatever amount makes it worthwhile for you. We encourage you to give price breaks for longer rental bookings. You can charge less per day when your gear is rented for 7+ days or 30+ days etc. This encourages renters to rent for longer (and makes it more affordable!).
WHERE DO I PICK UP THE GEAR RENTAL?
You and the owner arrange a time and place for the start and end of your rental booking. This can all be arranged prior to your booking confirmation via the direct messaging option on each rental page. The owner’s location is always included in their rental listing, so you will have an idea of where you will need to meet to pick up the gear.
WHAT IF THERE AREN’T ANY GEAR RENTALS LISTED IN MY AREA?
Then start the trend! By being the first to list in your area, all of the attention from those living in, or traveling to your area is directed at you.
WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF LOSING MY GEAR OR WHAT IF IT GETS DAMAGED?
When a customer books your gear on our site, we charge them for the booking and quote a security amount for the current value of your gear. You set this value when you list your gear. The security amount covers any late return fees, excessive damage to or loss of your gear.
Gear damage / Missing Parts: Should any gear be returned with missing parts or negligent damage the owner will advise Never Tracked Out Gear Trade of the issue. Gear owners set their own security value for the current worth of their gear. In the event excessive damage or loss occurs during the rental, extra fees can be assessed and charged directly to the customer. It is rare to incur severe damage to or loss of gear.
Late returns: If a renter returns the gear after the agreed upon drop-off time, the renter will be charged a late return fee, which is the equivalent of one day’s rental cost.
No shows: If a renter does not show up to pick up their rental and has not contacted the owner or a member of the Never Tracked Out Gear Trade team they will be charged the full amount of the rental period.
We also recommend renting out gear that you are comfortable letting other people use. Maybe your spare skis, boots, backpack, etc. There is a good chance your gear is going to get dirty, bumped or scratched and owners should accept this as part of the rental process – it’s being used to play outside and Mother Nature tends to leave her mark. The security deposit is meant for excessive damage, not for dirt, scratches and small wear and tear.
AM I LIABLE IF THE PERSON GETS INJURED USING MY GEAR?
We provide a rental agreement and liability waiver for both parties to sign prior to the rental commencing.
SO DO YOU GUYS TAKE A CUT?
As a gear owner, list and sell or rent out your gear for FREE. You, the gear owner, keep 100% of the booking or selling amount plus any extra charges you added for tax or rental package add-ons.
Rentals: As a rental customer, a small service fee is charged for each rental booking. This fee covers payment processing, security and all support services provided by Never Tracked Out Gear Trade to both the owner and renter during each rental. The owner is paid after the rental booking ends and we have confirmed the satisfaction of both parties, or after 24 hours (if we haven’t heard from either party we assume the rental went well).
HOW DOES THE MONEY GET TRANSFERRED TO THE OWNER AFTER A RENTAL?
Customers can pay for their booking on our site. We collect the booking payment and then after the rental is complete and both parties are satisfied, or after 24 hours (if we haven’t heard from either party we assume the rental went well), we remit payment to you via e-transfer or PayPal (your choice). This means owners and renters don’t have to deal with the money transactions and have the security of 3rd party protection.
If you prefer, you can collect rental money from customers off-site, in-person, however, Never Tracked Out Gear Trade cannot support you if any monetary or gear damage/loss disputes arise. We do not recommend this method for individual transactions, however, businesses are welcome to make bookings and complete rental transactions off-site under their own policies.
DO I NEED TO CLAIM THE MONEY I EARN AS INCOME?
We suggest that you contact a local tax specialist and consult them regarding any tax implications this income may have.
HOW DO I POST A REVIEW FOR A RENTAL?
The review button is available the next day AFTER the booking confirmed END DATE. Each user can send 1 review per rental listing. Reviews will be published instantly.
WHY CAN’T I SEE THE OWNER’S CONTACT INFORMATION?
Contact info on owner page is hidden by default for non-registered users and registered users with NO confirmed booking. Info shows only to users who have at least 1 confirmed booking or a user checks his own profile. Buyers can include their email address when contacting the owner if they prefer or exchange contact details later to complete the sale.
CAN OWNERS DENY RENTAL REQUESTS?
As the gear owner, you have the ability to approve or deny any booking requests. Be sure to communicate directly with the renter with any questions you may have about the rental.
